Google Launches Voice Recognition Search for Apple iPhone

posted by @ 7:20 AM
November 14, 2008

Google search has now added voice recognition software to their search application on Apple iPhones. Now, iPhone users can request Google results without having to type information on their phones, a must for drivers or those on the go … aren’t phones for speaking and listening anyway?
Google iPhone spoken search will be made available to Apple iPhone and iPod users today via the Apple iTunes store, and will let users ask questions that are not only local directory sensitive (like the 1-800-GOOG-411 experiment) but also basic search questions which request facts or figures. A blog is an awesome networking tool. Beside multiple obvious benefits (interacting with your audience, content link building, etc), there are a few more creative ways to build links with your blog.
Blog carnivals
A blog carnival is a regular topical event connecting multiple blogging based on a chosen theme. A blog carnival often includes a number of participants (most of them get credits i form of links and new niche connections):

the blog carnival organizer : if you are an established voice in your niche, you can organize your own blog carnival and get plenty of awareness;
blog host - the one who publishes the link collection (posts chosen to take part in the carnival) on his own blog and also generates multiple links from the thankful participants;
bloggers : those who write posts on the carnival topic and submit them for inclusion (and get links at least from the blog host site).

On-Demand Indexing by Google Custom Search Engine

posted by @ 5:55 AM
November 14, 2008

Google has introduced a new system to work in conjunction with its already existing Custom Search Engine (CSE).
Since the launch of the CSE, its had a downfall for smaller publishers. The engine couldn’t index the entire site properly. With the introduction of the new system, Google’s CSE is able to index full sites using sitemaps with on-demand flexibility.
Let’s say you are a site with 500 pages, but not a very popular site. Googlebot probably doesn’t index your site fully because it doesn’t think it needs to. But you want to use the Google CSE to offer search functionality on your site for your visitors. You obviously want to be able to offer those visitors the full search experience for any page on your site. Now you can.
Take a look at this video to see how it works :

Last May when I covered the Microsoft Live Search Cashback program, I must admit that I found it a bit outrageous as a way for Microsoft to promote its Live Search engine. And I could say that back then, I was not alone in feeling that way about the cashback program. A couple of months later, Microsoft reported that despite not gaining significant traction, the cashback program is still getting good amount of usage as well as traffic to its Live Search portal brought about by the program. Will Disney or Apple Buy Yahoo Before Microsoft Does?

posted by @ 14:39 PM
November 13, 2008

Well, I started a little speculation this morning that Apple might be buying Yahoo , which was piggybacked off of TechCrunch’s rumor that Apple may develop its own search engine. Now the Motley Fool is sticking their fingers in the Yahoo pie, especially since Yahoo Stock has dipped below $10, saying that despite some analyst predictions, Disney will not buy Yahoo.
OK, let me start of by saying this, Disney buying Yahoo is much more hairbrained of an idea than Apple buying Yahoo. I mean, I already named reasons why Yahoo would be a good acquisition target for Apple, but for those of you who missed my post, I’ll restate them here (more…)

Microsoft is rolling out some new features of its Windows Live Service that can simply be put as taking the social route. Actually it will be a whole suite of applications which Microsoft is infusing to Live.com portal. That’s right, a pseudo social network that would pull users’ online contents and various services from across the web. Aside from this, Microsoft will also be rolling out some new and old features which as Arrington said are previously being touted by Yahoo with its email service for over a year now. All these socially-relevant applications are aimed at making Live.com more interactive with the ultimate aim of making users stay longer at the site. (more…)

Import Google AdPlanner Media Campaign into Google AdWords

posted by @ 6:44 AM
November 13, 2008

Did you know that Google allows you to export your media campaigns from Google AdPlanner and add them to your Google AdWords account?
Since AdPlanner lets you identify sites based upon languages, geotargeting, demographics and keywords, sometimes you can identify the exact sites you want to target for your AdWords AdSense campaign, and then just import them over using this technique.
Here’s a how to video from Google on performing a successful import :

TubeMogul : Distribute Your Video to Multiple Sites

posted by @ 6:32 AM
November 13, 2008

Video is a great way to build links and manage reputation. A creative video will generate links on ts own (like any kind of good content), besides you can always help spread the video by distributing it to a number of video listing and hosting sites.
TubeMogul is a very helpful (and free!) service you can try if you are promoting video content. Here I am going to describe my (brief) experience with the site.
TubeMogul provides a quick access to quite a number of well known video hosting communities: Howcast, Viddler, Crackle, Revver, Dailymotion, YouTube and many more. Of course you will need to register at each site in advance ( quick tip: when creating an account at each site, make sure to make it complete: add an avatar, link back to your site, important details, etc ). Would an Apple Google Split Mean an Apple Yahoo Acquisition?

Pubcon/WebmasterWorld conference, here I come!

posted by @ 22:18 PM
November 11, 2008

I arrive Wednesday afternoon for the 2008 Pubcon conference , and I’ll be staying until after the networking event on the last day, which is the heart of the event. It’s the heart because the networking event is held at a pub, and the original idea of Pubcon was that some of the best parts of a conference take place at the pub after the official conference is done.
If you see me, please come up and say hello! Tell me how you’re doing, or what you like or dislike about Google. I’ll be participating in the Search Engine Super Session that traditionally wraps up the formal part of the conference.
What are you likely to see if you head to Las Vegas? Well, here are some pictures that I’ve been meaning to post for a year. No joke, I’m that behind on things I want to blog. First off, you’ll meet lots of search engine optimizers (SEOs) and webmasters:

As you can see, they’re a very fun and friendly bunch of folks. And if you’re lucky, you might run across a celebrity. Last year, we saw David Caruso:

The rumor was that Caruso was there to record some promotional material for Microsoft, but I never saw anything. If anyone knows of a David Caruso/Microsoft commercial, please send me a pointer.
WebmasterWorld is also a nice place to get a glimpse of what other smart people are doing. Last year was the first time I saw an Asus EEE :

Nowadays this is known as a “netbook” and they’re getting pretty popular with the kids these days . It looked so cool that right after the conference I went right to Amazon and ordered one. Unfortunately, my order got delayed and delayed until I finally canceled it, so I never ended up getting a netbook. Maybe I’ll try again at some point.
What else do I like about Pubcon? It’s a great chance to connect with people and just talk. For example, remember when I did this post about how triple-tap power adapters should be branded as schwag ? Well, at the conference last year both Topix and CareerBuilder surprised me by actually doing exactly that:

and

It’s pretty cool to see someone take your idea and just run with it. But the best reason to head to Pubcon is that lots of fun, smart people go, and it’s a chance to catch up with what’s happening in the world of search. Again, if you see me there, please say hello!

Last week’s new release of AdWords API has a feature that many have been waiting for: “First Page Bid Estimates”. This feature approximates the cost-per-click (CPC) bid needed for your ad to reach the first page of Google search results when a search query exactly matches your keyword. The estimate is based on the Quality Score and current advertiser competition for that keyword. (more…)

Google does allow us to have a sneak peek on which links it is aware of. This data is private and can be accessed only by the site owner through Google Webmaster Tools “Pages with external links” section. Surprisingly, (while Google does know better than anyone which data would be great to show for each backlinking page), the information is rather poorly organized and lacks much important data. Here are 3 FireFox extensions that can help with backlink research in Google Webmaster Tools:
1. SEO link analysis shows the essential link properties: nofollow attribute (strikes the link through), anchor text, or status (” Link not found “) and the linking page Google PageRank.
